Grand Photos is the 400-plus member photography club of  the Sun City Grand community in Surprise, Arizona. Our purpose is to educate members in all areas of photography through such means as weekly free workshops, photo shoots, presentations by various local photographers, and competitions.

Our Lab is located in the Saguaro Building, Sonoran Plaza.  Lab hours are from 9AM to Noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Members have access to our computer photo processing programs, wide-format printers, a well-stocked  library, and many other amenities.  There are always members present to help with problems or answer questions.  Workshops, membership and Special Interest Groups meet in the afternoons, along with some evening activities.

Grand Photos is participating for the first time as one of the six Arizona photo clubs forming a circuit to sponsor the judging and awards for the 2012 10th Grand Canyon Exhibition. This exhibition has been awarded recognition by the Photographic Society of America (PSA), of which Grand Photos is a proud member.

Some of you will be familiar with the circuit competitions listed in the PSA journal and on their website...and some of you have entered previously and won awards.

Here's the concept of this circuit competition.  Anybody in the world can enter this competition whether members of PSA or not.  A large percentage of entries are from other countries, and we are estimating we may be receiving more than 2,000 images!  The category for this competition is "Photo Travel".  Within that category are two sections - Open and Architecture.  You may enter a maximum of four digital images in each section, totalling no more than eight.  The total cost of entering is $36.00, for any number of images up through eight.

This may seem expensive compared to Grand Photo's charge of $1.00 per image, but here's where the circuit concept comes in.  Each of your images will be judged six separate times, by six different sets of judges in six different locations.   If you enter eight images, you have 48 chances to get an Acceptance or higher!!  In addition, Grand Photos will receive a share of the overall entry fees with the other five participating clubs.

Further details and the entry form are available by going to www.apsocietyaz.com/GCI_1.htm.  The deadline for entries is April 15th, 2012.

If you have any questions, please email me at sumarru165@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Sue Marrugi
Grand Photos GCI Circuit Chair.

Attention: All members of Grand Photos!

Grand Photos members
I guess you could call this a Help Wanted Ad. This solicitation is being sent out to the entire membership of Grand Photos. It is my feeling that there may be a number of folks who have an interest in helping or participating in the activities of Grand Photos. The issue comes when you don’t know who to ask or what there is that needs attention or needs someone to do the job. Quite possibly no one has ever asked you to help. Today I am asking for your participation.

A chairperson to coordinate the Photo Shoots.
This individual would organize trips to nearby locations that would be of photographic interest to our members. This person would be on the lookout for events and places that could accommodate small groups of people, along with getting hints from our members on places to go. They would provide the details to our communications coordinator, maintain a sign up list, and make sure the proper information was available to the participants. The coordinator would not have to attend the trips, but should make sure that each trip has a leader(s).

A Club Photographer
This individual would be in charge of arranging photo coverage as needed by our club and as requested by activities within Sun City Grand. This person may also enlist the help of other club members as needed. Our members love to take pictures, so their help is always available.

Festival Coordinator
Grand has two major festivals during the year, Oktoberfest (mid October) and Spring Faire (mid March). This individual would coordinate the activities within our building for these events. These festivals are a time to promote our club to Grand residents and to raise funds by selling cards and photos to the attendees. There are many members who volunteer to make these events a success; someone is needed that will pull them all together. The events are nearly identical, so that the plans for one can be carried over to the other.
A chairperson to act as “Sunshine” host.
This is probable one of the easiest positions I have open. This person will keep an ear to the ground to listen for members who have a need to be cheered-up or should receive a card from the membership or Board members. That person will address the card and mail or Email them in a timely manner.

Finally, I need a chairperson for the Social Committee.
This committee already has most of the work completed for this year. All the rooms have been booked, Host and co-host have been designated, and party themes have been chosen. If you need any questions answered please contact Liz Burke 337-5478

General:
In every case above this chairperson will be reporting to one of the Directors. The director-in-charge will become your advisor and assistant helping you along during the year. You are not going to be left alone to fend for yourself.
If there is any interest in any of the above opportunities, please contact me – Jim Smith, President 388-3225. I will be happy to have you join this fine group of committee chairs who dedicate themselves for your enjoyment.

Thank you,
Jim Smith

1) The ACCC has drastically changed how Digital entries to their Spring 2012 Competition must be submitted - The allowable pixel size has changed and entries must now be  submitted online  using a web entry form by Feb 10 and not at our Feb 7 ACCC "Turn-in" (Prints will still be entered as usual at the Feb 7  ACCC "Turn-in"). The new information and procedures have been posted to the ACCC website and the Grand Photos website is being revised accordingly.

2) The Competition Prep Workshop Jan 31 @ 1 pm will cover the new ACCC Digital entry procedures. Assistance will also be available at the Feb 7 "Turn-in" on a first-come first-served basis.

3) The above changes only apply to the ACCC Round-up. For at least this spring - there are NO changes to the entry procedures for Grand Photos Competitions.

Photography, by nature, is a creative undertaking. That means our Grand Photos membership is full of creative ideas. Some of these might even help us create a better club.

Have an idea regarding education, events, procedures, facilities, equipment, or communications? Consider anything that might make Grand Photos a better club for all of us.

On the right-hand side of our website is a new link "Member Suggestion Box". Clicking here will take you to a simple form in which you can enter your idea. Yours, and other member ideas, could be the ones that take our club to a whole new level.
