Facilities

Grand Photos is divided into a number of sections for the use and benefit of our members. When you enter the Lab, one first notices the Photo Print Gallery on the right. Here, member prints are on display and available for purchase. Less visible, is a separate room, affectionately called the "Darkroom". It is here that various computers, printers and scanners are avaiable for members. Elsewhere, in the cabinets is the club library. There is a wide selection of photobooks and magazines. Finally, the main area acts as the classroom and club meeting area.

The selections below discuss in more detail each area, how members can avail themseleves of each, and how they should be maintained.

The main area of the Saguaro Building that houses Grand Photos is the Classroom/Meeting Area. This is a 27 by 30 foot open area that is used for classes, meetings, slideshows, and general discussion sessions. The room has chairs and large moveable tables and can accommodate up to 55 people.

There is a wall-mounted 55 inch Samsung LCD monitor and a high-quality, ceiling-mounted Sanyo XGA projector with a new 80 by 60 inch roll-up screen. Both the monitor and the projector can be connected separately or in combination to a computer (either the club's or an individual's). A sound system is also installed in the room. This equipment is used to display high fidelity color images and slideshows as well as an aid for the many classes that are conducted here.

We also have studio lighting equipment and backdrops that are used for portrait and table top photography. Special arrangements are necessary for the use of this equipment.

Remote Control Operating Guidelines
PDF Version

The first six steps of the following instructions should be all you need for normal operation of the new projector
: The color, contrast and brightness have been adjusted to work with the club's laptop. The focus, zoom, lens shift and keystone have been optimized for the current projector and screen installation. Recommend you leave the TV off and use only the projector for normal workshop presentations.

1. Your computer should be on and connected to the VGA cable prior to turning on the projector. For maximum clarity/sharpness set your laptop resolution to 1024 x 768.

2. Reset/On/All-Off switch should be in On position (bottom center of the remote)

3. On button – the green indicator lamp comes on, projector fan starts and after a brief warm-up period the Sanyo logo should appear on the screen.

4. After startup, the projector should automatically scan the inputs and locate your computer. If it goes to an all blue screen and indicates no input signal, check to make sure your computer is connected and set for an external display (one of your function keys should turn the external display function on/off)

5. Input button - the projector will scan again to locate your computer

6. STAND-BY button – press the button twice to turn the projector off

The following optional controls are preset for normal operations.

7. Shutter button - Close and open the built-in shutter. Note, the projector will shut down automatically if the shutter remains closed longer than 30 minutes. Once the shut down cycle begins you will not be able to restart the projector until cooling fan stops running.

8. Screen button - to select size

a. Normal - normal computer aspect ratio of 4:3

b. True - Provide the image in its original size. When the original image size is larger than the screen size (1024 x 768), the projector enters to the panning mode automatically. Use the Point ▲▼◄► buttons to pan the image. When adjusted, the arrows will turn red.

c. Wide - wide video aspect ratio (16:9)

d. Full - Provides the full screen image

e. Custom – Allows user to adjust the Horizontal/Vertical screen scale manually

9. Auto PC button - automatically adjust Fine sync, Total dots, Position H and Position V positions to conform to your computer.

10. Info button - Display the input source information

11. Menu button - Open or close the On-Screen Menu. The menu settings have been preset for normal operation. You may have an occasion to make additional adjustments however, please return the settings to their original position prior to turning the projector off.

a. Use the Point ▲▼ buttons to highlight or select a main menu item. Press the Point ► or the SELECT button to access the submenu items. (The selected item is highlighted in orange.)

b. Use the Point ▲▼ buttons to select the desired submenu item and press the SELECT button to set or access the selected item.

c. Use the Point ▲▼◄► buttons to adjust the setting or switch between each option and press the SELECT button to activate it and return to the submenu.

Not too long ago, the darkroom was a place where the photographer would take the image
media (film) from his camera and convert it into prints that he could show to the world.
This darkroom was filled with chemicals, trays, clips, hangers, a timer, and an enlarger and
was almost pitch black. It was a place where time consuming experimentation was done to
come up with an acceptable print.

Today's "digital darkroom" is a more refined place where the photographer can work with
his image media (memory cards). It is well lit, no chemicals, not messy (most of the time)
and the resulting images can be quickly seen, modified, and displayed.

Grand Photos has its own Darkroom at the photo lab in the Saguaro building. It is open to
all members who wish to work on their photographic "masterpieces". The Darkroom
consists of the following items:

Computers: There are 2 PC's and 1 iMac with the latest software programs needed to
change your "as shot" images into your own works of art. These can then be saved on your
memory card or CD/DVD disc. There are a number of special software programs installed
that can perform amazing things with your images.

Printers: There are 2 Epson printers--an R3000 and an R1800--capable of making high
quality prints of your digital images, up to size 13 by 19 inches.  There is a charge for ink
and paper.

Scanners: There are 2 Epson 4990 scanners where you can make digital images of your
existing prints (up to 8.5 by 11.7 inches), slides, or negatives. These are connected to the
computers so you can perform further processing on them if you desire and then save them
on your own media.

Digital Image Converter: There is a Wolverine SNAP Image Converter that can make jpeg
images of photos (up to 5x7 inch), negatives, and slides and save them on your SD/SDHC
memory card. This is a free-standing device that is not connected to a computer.

Online Training: The club has online access to hundreds of training classes available on
topics related to photography, software programs, and computers. These can be viewed on
our computers – use our headphones or bring your own.

Stop by and look at what is available for your use. There is always someone available that
can help with your questions and get you going to do more that just "taking pictures".

Pending additional content

There are several pieces of equipment in the Photo Lab Building that are valuable to many
photographers. These are available for use by our members and can be used during Open Lab hours.
Some of these items require knowledge of how to operate them and the hazards involved. If you're not
sure, ask for help.

Mat Cutter

We have a 48 inch Fletcher Mat Cutter that can be used for custom making your own photo mats.
Instructions are offered periodically on the use and techniques of this system.
